Safety Tips For College Students

The imagined ideal of the student in the ivory tower protected from the real world is as far from reality as a knight in shining armor. In truth, students face very real situations where they may be at risk. Campuses can be safe places however, if the student employs caution and the help of whatever security is available from the college.

* Learn what help campus security can offer to increase your safety. If their services are only available in certain areas or if they do not patrol some portions of the campus at regular intervals this is valuable information to you. Do not assume you will be safe anywhere within the campus boundaries.

* Most campuses have excellent provisions for lighting in the most traveled paths after dark. Stick to these paths.

* Make sure that your keep your dormitory room locked at all times.

* Let a roommate or a friend know where you are going and how long you might be gone when your leave campus.

* Always enlist the company of at least one other person when jogging or exercising outside.

* Do not wear headphones as they can seriously impair your ability to predict and avoid a confrontation.

* On dates, do not compromise your safety with people you don't know. Make your feelings very clear so that there isn't any possibility for misread messages. Date rape is a phenomenon hardly ever reported but, sadly, one which occurs all too frequently.
